Dan, we also thought about this conversion’tool’, but it remains complex. To all: if you have GDGs or customers with GDGs which they want to convert to Extended, but you don’t have the time, space or other opportunities to do it the complex way: vote for the RFE!. The URL is https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=69672 Kees. ----- We have some idea’s how to ‘convert’ GDGs: - Delete all GDSs, delete the base, define an Extended GDG, restore all GDSs from their backups, which will roll them in into the new GDG. It will be time and space consuming to restore all 255 GDSs from their backup tapes. - Define a temp GDG, rename all GDSs to entries of the temp GDG, delete the old GDG, define an Extende GDG and rename all GDSs back to the new GDG. However this requires them all to be on disk, again requiring the time and space consuming restores. But I tend towards an enhancement request for an IDCAMS ALTER EXTENDED function. Apparently IBM did not well oversee the real world, where customers would like to change production GDGs to limit(999) i a smple way. It must not be that difficult to convert an old GDG base catalog record to an Extended record, while retaining all the GDSs. Kees.
