Clark, I agree with you completely. However for initial debugging, especially with COBOL 6.1...I never used 5.x... I recommend you run with OPT(0) to get the wrinkles out. Of course you will also want ARCH(11) if you have a z13, or whatever setting is appropriate. There are a lot of recommendations in the out in the ether or on SHARE. Once you "think" the modules are working, then I would optimize and thoroughly test in pseudo-production.
