First, congrats, and welcome to the "basement mainframe club"...it's quiet exclusive. :)
Second, a running ES/9000 is crazy-hard to come by; so that's a great score! Tips: I second what Tom Mathias said - guard that tape better than a nuclear football. One of the first things I did once I got my z800 running was to bit-level image all of the CDs, DVDs, & floppies, plus both support elements and the HMC's hard drives. That's then backed up locally twice and off-site twice. Overkill, but VERY important to keep copies of everything. You *may* be able to run older Linux distros. The ES/9000 is close enough to S/390 (itself is based on ES/3900 from what I remember) that you might be able to boot some of the 31-bit compiled distros. You can also boot in non-XA mode and run OS/360 & MVS 3.8J, which are available for free on the CBT Tapes archives. Good luck! ________________________________________ From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List <[email protected]> on behalf of William Donzelli <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 1, 2017 09:46 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: ES/9000 microcode I do not know what is on the machine, but I am going to assume that it may indeed be wiped. -- Will On Thu, Jun 1, 2017 at 9:07 AM, W Mainframe <[email protected]> wrote: > blockquote, div.yahoo_quoted { margin-left: 0 !important; border-left:1px > #715FFA solid !important; padding-left:1ex !important; background-color:white > !important; } Hey Will, > I am curious...What is your OS running in your big iron?Dan > > > Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone > > > On Wednesday, May 31, 2017, 7:19 PM, William Donzelli <[email protected]> > wrote: > > So this idiot just purchased an 9221 system from Tennessee (apparently > it was still in service two years ago, and is in wonderful condition), > and I made damn sure that the console with the IMPL tape was included. > I even tracked down the machine's former admin just to be sure.
