My understanding is the JDBC "Type 4" (pure Java) client for DB2 has the DRDA 
protocol "built in", and thus no additional DB2 software is required on the 
client.  I don't know if I've ever actually tried this, however, so I may not 
be correct.

I understand - but this my be wrong understaning - that Java programs can 
access data bases via JDBC, and this will connect through TCP/IP to a suitable 
DBRM on the remote host. Does our statement mean that running such a Java 
program on z/OS would need a local DB2?
