There used to be a re-inking service. 'course if they hadn't been used for music(the carriage stops for backspace). Used to be a trophy ribbon at the Help Desk with a gaping tear edge-to-edge 'Over printing is cool'.
Don't remember when the continuous form printers converted from powder to beads. Demo 3835 CE at SHARE said he was displaying the new printer for the bigwigs and about 5 minutes before the tour the 'change bag light' comes on so he rushes out to van and gets the replacement and as they were coming down the hall yanks the old one out and was headed to recycle bag and stumps his tow and drops the bag in the middle of the floor. Said it looked like a black volcano. Had to shut the print shop down get a cleanup crew on the fly. Learning to change a printer ribbon without getting any ink on me was the hardest skill I learned in my career as an operator (the disposable plastic gloves were only sporadically available; and obviously, didn't protect your arms, legs, torso, face, hair...). I never operated a 3800, but I guess it was worse. Those guys always looked like they'd been working in a coal mine at the end of the shift. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [email protected] with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
