countries on June 17, 2016. IBM maintenance services for the 3592-C07
controller will be available for some time to come (no End of Service date
announced).

It is really nice sales pitch, but *technically* IBM it is no longer
possible to write directly to a tape volume from z/OS.
Yes, VTS is still able to use TS1150 (what about TS1155???), but it is
backend of the VTS, not frontend.
Previously I had a choice: use native drives or buy VTS add-on. Now we
have only VTS.
BTW: that's one of the reasons why IBM stopped software distribution on
tapes. You cannot install software from TS1150 drive, even if attached
via VTS.
