Matt: I totally agree. A lot of folks dont realize its not always TCPIP and the Web, there's more to z/OS then those items. Many aspects that can be developed and used. I spent 15+ yrs in the VTAM/NCP/NPSI arena including hardware and software and it provided IMHO an excellent foundation.
