Nothing real magical about it. First requirement is to make sure that all the required co-existence maintenance is applied and ACTIVE on all members of the sysplex. Then, assuming you have alternate sysres set, and everything is indirectly cataloged, you should be able to IPL one system at a time operating in a mixed mode. How fast you migrate is your call, but we migrate our production lpars over a period of about 6 weeks, and prior to that the upgrade has been in our sandbox and DEV environments for a few months help shake out unexpected events.
