Huh. Well then, what WAS the purpose of VISAM?

Not arguing with you. Just wondering now. I KNOW my client had a home-grown 
hybrid ISAM/BDAM access methond.

No, that's not true either. This from the previously mentioned ISAM Logiic 
manual:
