Laren--As long as the tape drive is defined in the IOCDS you loaded, it will be "attached".  You "attach" something under VM by connecting the device to the virtual machine you are on.  You do the "attach" by sending a command to the "micro-code" of your virtual machine, that being CP.  If you're on the barebones machine, it is the "machine"--nothing virtual about it.  When you enter the tape drive address on the HMC load frame that you are going to ipl from, that's the same as entering a "ipl 181" on the virtual machine.

I am about to start up a new z800 with a new storage array.  I know that I will have to do a standalone IPL from tape after installing IOCP. How do I get another tape drive attached and do I need to have it attached as 181 or can I just use the CUU from the IOCP?
