55K for a skilled position is ridiculous even on the East Coast. I recently saw an add for a Unix/Linux sysadmin, with all that normally goes with such a position, in Jersey City (across the Hudson from Manhatten) and they were willing to go as high as $28K (according to the add). I laughed and moved on ...
