Steve,

No ... it's not doc'd anywhere!  The only thing that is doc'd is that you *must* put "the number" (Sequence Number as the CP command calls it) into your RMS configuration file.

I suppose this is why IBM finally did give the customer the ability to get this information via single simple CP command ... as opposed to the first method I provided which is to go traipsing through CP control blocks in storage.

Steve, Alan, thanks for your replies.  This helps tremendously.
Just for fun, I plugged in the number that you used below.  (I know mine will be different.)
I got the following response:

FSMBBV3053I All DFSMS local APPC/VM resources initialized
FSMRMBLC==> Diag 254 is available
FSMBBC0505E Internal error from routine 2523, return code = 3
FSMBBC2028E The specified subsystem 10568 does not exist in VM real IO config
FSMSMS3009E Errors have caused DFSMS initialization to stop

Does DFSMS issue a similar command to verify that the numbers match?
I'm sure a lot of this is doc'd somewhere, but I'm like a kid on Christmas morning, I've got a
new toy and I want to play with it.   8-)

Hmm ... yes, that's what I would have suspected ... like QUERY DASD
DETAILS.

    q tape details e00
    TAPE 0E00 SEQUENCE NUMBER 10568 LIBPORT 1
    Ready; T=0.01/0.01 09:12:16

Thinking back, I guess I never simply tried the command ... I was more
distressed by the fact that I could not find the correct syntax via HELP
(could IBM have forgotten to update the QUERY TAPES Help in the GA
release?):
