Steve,

The evidence you've provided to this point tells me you're already well beyond "how do I communicate with the 3494 Library Manager?" ... you're doing it!  From what you state below ... you're doing it via FICON attachment.

Subject: another 3494 question

The 3494 has a library manager.  It can be communicated with by at least 3 different ways,   RS232, Ethernet, or ESCON/FICON.
What is the normal or most accepted method of communicating with the Library Manager?  The DFSMS doc says it needs
TCPIP running (which we do run).  Does the CE or someone need to config the LibMgr as to which method to use or does it
look and listen for commands coming from anywhere?
Slightly, OT:   We currently run a z800 mdl 001, EMC Symmetrics (about 4 years old), and 3590 tapes.  We have 8 escon channels
going to the EMC and 2 ESCON's going to the 3590.  It takes about 7 to 8 minutes to backup a 3390 mdl-3
The equip we're moving too is, again a z800 mdl 001, 3494 tape library, and DS8100.  The 3494, I think, has 2 FICON's running to
it, the DS8100 has 4 FICON's running to it.  The restore time for a full pack 3390 mdl-3 is a little over 2 minutes.  OO-Rah!   I'm impressed!

Steve,

No ... it's not doc'd anywhere!  The only thing that is doc'd is that you *must* put "the number" (Sequence Number as the CP command calls it) into your RMS configuration file.

I suppose this is why IBM finally did give the customer the ability to get this information via single simple CP command ... as opposed to the first method I provided which is to go traipsing through CP control blocks in storage.

Re: DFSMS/VM config question,

Steve, Alan, thanks for your replies.  This helps tremendously.

Just for fun, I plugged in the number that you used below.  (I know mine will be different.)

I got the following response:

FSMBBV3053I All DFSMS local APPC/VM resources initialized
FSMRMBLC==> Diag 254 is available
FSMBBC0505E Internal error from routine 2523, return code = 3
FSMBBC2028E The specified subsystem 10568 does not exist in VM real IO config
FSMSMS3009E Errors have caused DFSMS initialization to stop

Does DFSMS issue a similar command to verify that the numbers match?

I'm sure a lot of this is doc'd somewhere, but I'm like a kid on Christmas morning, I've got a
new toy and I want to play with it.   8-)

Hmm ... yes, that's what I would have suspected ... like QUERY DASD
DETAILS.

   q tape details e00
   TAPE 0E00 SEQUENCE NUMBER 10568 LIBPORT 1

Thinking back, I guess I never simply tried the command ... I was more
distressed by the fact that I could not find the correct syntax via HELP
(could IBM have forgotten to update the QUERY TAPES Help in the GA
release?):
