Hi!
To make the Linux-system working try to link the disk to a working Linux-instance and mount it as e.g. /mnt
Then do a "chroot /mnt" and do your "homework" (zipl, mkinitrd etc.) Set your /etc/inittab for 3270 to skip for login:
# Default HMC/3215/3270 console:
# 1:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty --noclear /dev/ttyS0 dumb
#
# - skip logon in 3270
1:2345:respawn:/bin/bash
To exit, do "sync" and "exit" from "chrrot /mnt"

I'm thinking someone stepped on the root file sys. We haven't made any
chancges to this system in seveal months and have booted it just 5 days
ago and the developers have been working on it transfer files yesterday.
