I like having a Standalone VM system backed up on tape so that I can restore to a 'free' volume and ipl that to check out anything. I can get it down to fit on a 3390-m3 so that the backup fits on one 3490 tape. It has helped us in more than one hardware switch and at disaster recovery exercises.
