I have not really been following this particular thread, but
this last paragraph reminded me of something.

I seem to remember that I had a bug on 4.3 that I could
IPL an *attached* volume, but NOT a minidisk.
The error I got was also some sort of disk hardware
error, perhaps this, perhaps other... I don't really remember.
it was no longer supported and I used ATT as a circumvention
(I was installing 4.4 at the time).

Just for the fun of it... does IPL of an attached volume work?
even when the SAME volume ATT to SYSTEM, and linked 
as a minidisk fails?

(Somewhere in IBM's records there ought to be memory 
of this, I believe I did spend some time with support(Israel)
on it).
