As I said, this is a hardware facility. If the OS registers for it, the signal is generated whenever a disruptive task is being performed against the running partition. And, actually, z/OS does make at least one check for VM: he wants to know whether or not to use "active wait" for his spin locks or to exploit diag 0x44. Alan Altmark z/VM Development IBM Endicott
