> config in Z and G5 machines. The theoretical maximum is a large number. The practical maximum is much smaller and is completely determined by what kind of problem the workload contains. There's no way to reliably answer the question without knowing precisely what the workload is comprised of, and the exact configuration of your target machine. As others have commented, the G5 (while usable) is probably not the wisest choice for Linux workload today. It lacks a number of architectural enhancements made in the System z boxes to improve Linux performance, and is in general a harder cost case to make for migrating workload (even if it's unused and available at minimal cost). Current releases of the commercial Linux distributions no longer run on it, and most of the commercial applications require a commercial distribution to be supported. It might be acceptable as an interim solution if you're looking at mostly internally developed applications, but not a good long term choice.
