Jim -

I also went to one room schools near Slippery Rock starting in 1948:

   New Hope School 1st grade
   Flat Rock School 2nd - 4th grade
   Coal Town School 5th grade

Other one room schools with colorful names in the area were:

   Rye Bread School
   Pipe Stem School

I can't remember what kind of clock we had in these schools. I do
remember that they all had a pot belly stove in the middle of the
room. Above the blackboard there was a 48 star U.S. flag flanked by
pictures of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. And to complete
the picture there were outhouses behind the schools and a water pump
on the side.

Flat Rock School had 19 students. There were 4 students in my class,
two boys and two girls.

My family moved to Pittsburgh in the middle of 5th grade. I
remember that I was ahead of the kids in the big city school in
reading and arithmetic.

There is a restored one room school house on the front campus of SRU.
