Any operating system that uses the instruction set and architecture of the 
IBM mainframe (System/390 or z/Architecture) can run in a virtual machine 
on z/VM.

So, if your version of Linux has been compiled with for the "s390x" 
architecture, it can run in a z/VM virtual machine.
