I to have had problems with zLinux with unformatted minidisks.

However, this may be old, historical stuff. And, at that time, I knew
a lot less then I do now.

Back about 5 years ago, SLES7 and/or I had problems with unformatted
CMS disks at install. This included problems when I reinstalled SLES7
on top of it self.

For testing/education, I would install SLES7, while recording what I
did.
Then I would reinstall based on my notes.
If I didn't do a CMS format first, 9 times out of 10, the reinstall
failed.

It could be that I had a working procedure which was based on a freshly
formatted CMS disks and I never developed a procedure for anything else.
It could have been fixed by maintenance or a later release. It could
have been fixed by a change in my install instructions. Don't know.

But I did have that kind of problem and I continue to CMS format the
disks prior to any install. And as it now takes about 10 minutes to CMS
format a 3390-9, I have no motivation to change my install procedures

Actually, I¹ve never formatted minidisks before giving them to a Linux
guest. Dasdfmt works just fine for me, without any prep at all. Are
you
actually seeing a problem, or just making an assumption?
