I have DDRed non-active SPOOL volumes without problems. My standalone
system is perfect for that. It is self-contained and does NOT touch the
production volumes. The production volumes can be dumped, copied,
restored, whatever and then you can bring up your production system
using the new DASD devices, same old volsers, same old data.

Is there some reason to not DDR them? The system will be down, so they

Our tape units are few and slow; dasd is fast.

Richard -
I would not DDR any of my SPOOL dasd.
I would use SPXTAPE to dump standard spool files. then another SPXTAPE
to dump system files like NSS and IMG.
Format new DASD with packs for SPOL, PAGE and DUMP.
LOAD the system files then the spool files with SPXTAPE.

Right after the first of the year, we will forced to move to new DASD.
My plan is to do as much while the system is running as I can, then
shut it down so that I can bring up a small system that has several
concurrently running DDRs as seems reasonable. My question is, is it
necessary to DDR the packs reserved for dumps, or, if there are no dump
files in spool, can I just substitute pre-formatted disks like I can
for the page packs.
