That was my assumption. SPXTAPE is the only option when changing
geometry, but seems unnecessary when moving to a disk of the same size
and type.

I have DDRed non-active SPOOL volumes without problems. My standalone
system is perfect for that. It is self-contained and does NOT touch the
production volumes. The production volumes can be dumped, copied,
restored, whatever and then you can bring up your production system
using the new DASD devices, same old volsers, same old data.
