We are running 8.2 in 64-bit with SP3. However, I plan on installing SLES 10 SP2 under z/VM 5.3 as a new install.

Even if you do it in multiple steps, you also need to know that going from 31-bit to 64-bit is not a supported (or workable) upgrade path. Mark Post
