ISTR the MVS folks adopted the eagle as a mascot after the teddy bear became the VM symbol. In the friendly rivalry and sniping between the VM and MVS folks, they used it as the American eagle vs. the Russian bear of the VM Group.

Another shot was fired by VMer and IBMer Stu Toledano, who suggested that VM adopt a Pilgrim theme, because on Thanksgiving Pilgrims eat turkeys.

Sign.  I really miss those days....

That was actually the MVS Performance Project, not the overall MVS Program. (My first few SHARE conferences were pretty focused on that project.)
