A zVM 5.3 user (not even one of our customers) is trying to use a 3590 to
migrate from their current ( about to expire) FLEX-ES system to a system z
and is having problems.
The 3590-E11 is ESCON attached to the FLEX system and the customer can
read and write the tape from a zOS guest. Seems to work fine there so we
know (believe?) he tape drive itself is functioning properly and VM has
properly recognized the tape drive (all query commands coma back with
expected results: q tape details... etc.)

Not so long ago, I was testing out a SCSI Ultrium drive, which
would not read any of my previous tapes, but would read any that
it wrote. It turned out that it was configure with a fixed block
size of 1024. Anything it wrote (with blocksize a multiple of 1024)
was reblocked to 1024 and could be read back. Anything previously
written with a larger blocksize would fail on read.

I don't know if ESCON drives are similar in having the fixed
blocksize option, though.
