As was mentioned, if you want to stop short of destruction, IBM offers a 
secure data erase service for disks.  I see also that FDRERASE has a 
certified secure erase function if you have z/OS hanging around somewhere.

A Q&D program to use the Data Secure Erase CCW for tapes is sufficient to 
erase them.
