Not in my experience - just pack it and mail it off or FTP it now a days.

Doesn't the IBM VM 2nd level support group want sites to send them VM 
dumps that have been 
compressed by TERSE? Perhaps at one time you had a file that you wanted to 
send to IBM, 
and they sent you the VM TERSE module so you could compress it first?
