I found the procedure to enter single user mode in the Virtualization Cookbook for SLES 10 SPs2 (Oct 2008) on page 194 to recover the root password by entering the following command at IPL: #cp vi vmsg 0 1.... However, when I get to the end of the procedure, it asks for the root password... (Since I don't know what it is, I thought I could just create a new Root password.) Do I need to enter a cntrl character to get a # sign to bypass the request to "Give root password for login:" so I can recreate the Root password? Do you have another running Linux server you have root access to? You could give it permission to link the disks of the failing server - mount it's disks -- do chroot -- set the root password - exit - umount the disks - bring up the server. Or - any other user that has sudo authority you can login with to change the password? You could also boot the install kernel, mount the proper disks, and change the password for root that way...
