The stages of complexity are similar to GML Starter Set. Writing
documents that use it is very easy. Understanding the parameters that
allow for generic changes of the layout is still easy. But writing
your own macro's for different content items or for a different layout
requires good understanding of the DCF language.

To provide the rich vocabulary of bookie would require some work in
docbook. And I have not seen a formatting document that produces
output as elegant as bookie did.
