Marcy - that's remarkably helpful information to me. These kinds of things are probably self-evident to most people here, but
I'm generally clueless on how VM works. Based on what you said about the read, I tried logging on as operator to see where it got 'stuck' at read. There are a couple of commands in profile exec, one is called VMINIT and it waits for an 'enter'. The directory entry fo operator has an IPL 190, but there's no PARM AUTOCR. I'll add that and hopefully we won't see this particular problem again. Thanks so much for your help
