You can even relabel the volume before you shutdown without causing spool 
problems. Just make sure that you change the system config file and the volser 
in close proximity. You cannot change only one of them and ipl the system 
without causing spool errors.

In addition to what Mike said, keep in mind that you can change the spool 
volume name without having to dump all of your spool and reload.  As long as 
keep the same slot numbers, you can re-label the volume.  Update your SYSTEM 
CONFIG with the new label, shutdown, re-label the volume, IPL.  I am pretty 
sure this will work but you must test carefully.
