There are backing tapes in the library that I believe are not addressable from
the system while the ones facing the channel are all emulated. Thanks for what
should have been an obvious answer, especially since I have very recently used
the Q DASD DETAILS command. I must be getting too old.

Richard,
QUERY TAPE DETAILS will tell if a drive is in an IBM library. I'm not sure if
it can tell the difference between a virtual and physical drive. We don't have
any physical drives in IBM libraries on VM. Here are the responses from a
physical drive in an STK silo followed by an IBM VTS drive:

q ta details 340
TAPE 0340 SEQUENCE NUMBER ----- LIBPORT -
Ready;
q ta details d800
TAPE D800 SEQUENCE NUMBER 31000 LIBPORT 1
Ready;

Is there any way to tell if a tape drive on the system is a VTS virtual drive?
Visual inspection is not an option as the system and peripherals are over 1000
miles from here.
