And you don't have to take DIRMAINT down to erase files-- you can issue DIRM CMS ERASE xxx VCONTROL E (don't have a system handy - I think 1DF is accessed as E -- otherwise do a DIRM CMS Q DISK or DIRM CMS LISTFILE * VCONTROL * to figure it out)
