I've tested with the new emacs23 package in Ubuntu 9.10 beta and PPA version of ibus: without using LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8 the input method cannot be triggered, when the LC_CTYPE is set, the input method can be activated but the "space" key (or any other key) won't submit the characters typed.
