New issue 1173 by [email protected]: feature request: add "enable"
and "disable" hotkeys to ibus-1.4
http://code.google.com/p/ibus/issues/detail?id=1173
Currently ibus only supports "trigger" hotkey which enables and disables
ibus alternatively (i.e. toggle.) However, many Japanese people seem to
prefer a pair of "enable IME unconditionally" and "disable IME
unconditionally" hotkeys more. I see this kind of feature request to ibus
at least once a month on e.g. twitter, blogs, or Ubuntu user forums. A good
example is https://forums.ubuntulinux.jp/viewtopic.php?pid=61793 (written
in Japanese). So, how about implementing the feature for ibus-1.4?
The reason why Japanese users tend to prefer the feature is probably
because the Japanese version of Mac OS X and its default input method
framework supports the feature *by default*. To support the feature, the
Japanese keyboard for Mac is equipped with two dedicated keys for enabling
and disabling IME, かな (Hiragana) and 英数 (alphanumeric), and users can
use the keys without any configuration.
Microsoft Windows and SCIM also support the "unconditionally enable/disable
IME" feature while it's not enabled by default. A Japanese keyboard for PC
has keys that could be used for that purpose.
If you like the feature, I'll work on it. As you know, the change should be
very small.
