I think I found what is causing the issue. It's Unity. I just installed Gnome-Shell, restarted the session into Gnome, and I was able to type there without the issue I mentioned in #1. Back in Unity, I still have the problems, though. Maybe this helps for the solution. Please tell me if it's better to file a new issue instead of this one (as the opening post is no longer valid, the problem is now described in comment #1)
