Currently ibus works with freedesktop.
ibus panel icon shows on notification area:
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/systemtray-spec
The old desktop does not have the notification area so you cannot switch
engines because ibus panel icon handles it.
There are two workarounds:
1. Run panel from another desktop.
E.g. after you run xfce4-panel, run ibus-daemon, the stataus icon will be
shown.
2. Switch engines by command line:
% ibus help
% ibus list-engine
% ibus engine xkb:us::eng
