Thanks - setting XMODIFIERS solved it. In Ubuntu 12.04 this was set in
/etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/zh_CN (and other files in xinput.d). In 13.04 these
files have changed completely, to set fctix as input method instead of ibus
and do not set XMODIFIERS. Is that a problem, that XMODIFIERS is no longer
set in 13.04?
