I also think the best solution is for the server to select
StructureNotify on the client's window, ...
I'm not sure if I fully understand your solution but probably I think it
cannot be implemented in ibus side because the behavior is unknown in the
x11 spec.
I asked how to reproduce it.
Probably I guess originally you find your bug in your application.
I've got the reports of the similar assertion errors but none could not
explain how to get the problems.
Probably the problem could happen with the custom XIM server.
I will revert the change of

and I think the attached patch fixes this bug.
