First and foremost, have an experienced and trustworthy surveyor make a
COMPLETE inspection of the hull using a professional moisture meter. Test
every thru hull fastener and fitting. You will find moisture, but the
important fact is how much and how extensive is the moisture. If the boat has
been a hard winter region, delamination is a concern in areas were there is
any significant moisture.

Thoroughly check the mast step both on deck and below the floorboards.
Check the shroud and chain plates as well as the fore and aft tangs. Look
carefully at the mast fittings for corrosion.

Have motor mounts and thru hulls inspected. You can expect to have engine
work done in the future, so its condition is important to note.

Once you have the above information you will know better what to expect in
the way of repairs in the future.

Hi, All. I just joined the group because I'm considering buying a 1976
Catalina 27 that's for sale locally and I'm hoping that some of you
experienced owners could fill me in on problem areas that I should be on the
lookout
for. I'm kinda new to sailboats but I'm good at understanding and fixing
mechanical stuff. I don't want to find out a month from now that I bought
someone else's big problem. Thanks. -Chet
