One and occasionally in the past that has drawn a photographer (Catalina
Direct) and/or professional film crew (filming a documentary on a super
sized catamaran onsite final assembly at Tahoe). It's important to rig it
properly and proceed as if the rigging could fail at any moment but that's
only common sense.

It gets a little easier with two as I normally use one hand just to manage
the furler drum so it doesn't slide on the foredeck and raise the mast
single handed. I let the second person handle the furler and we negotiate
who is going to clear any rigging that snags usually based on who is on that
side of the mast. Even then I maintain a 3-4 foot wide keep out zone from
the mast step aft once the mast starts to move. Sometime that second set of
eyes is a big help but they don't do any lifting and they never get to touch
the mast.

Last year I failed to make it clear to my helper don't touch the mast and my
helper jerked the mast forward the last few inches while I was reaching down
to slip and instrument cable back under the front edge of the mast. Luckily
it sheared the instrument cable not my finger, I always say if you can't be
good be lucky. It's just my lot in life, if I accept help something always
goes awry. It gets awkward since I help a lot of people but I wind up saying
no really I'm fine a lot.

Thanks Phil, I just joined this group so I appreciate the feedback. How many
people do you need to step your mast?

Mark,

Mine comes up from the aft where I have built a support. That means I can do
mine on the water when needed. If you come up from the bow any support would
have to be off the boat somewhere.

Subject: [IC27A] Stepping a mast

I just bought my 27 and need the info on building the a frame to step the
mast. It has a hinged mast step that is set to hinge from the front. Which
way would be the easiest to step the mast? Thanks for the feedback.
