Mark, I would guestimate it will cost $4000-6000 to replace the engine, trans, etc. You possibly could get some of the parts off a boat that someone is selling piecemeal.
I think your best bet is to just bite the bullet on correcting the mount for the outboard and change the motor to a long-shaft. Probably still cost in the neighborhood of $2500 but a LOT less aggravation.
