Joe,
Thanks. I currently have a Sailcare "Sail Cradle" system on the
boat. It was cheap to buy, but I've never been a big fan, and have experienced
all the problems you mentioned. Yesterday, it dumped the sail on my head while
I was motoring into my slip, which is a semi-tricky feat to begin with. I did a
little research on the web last night. I came up with Harken, Schaeffer,
Wichard, JiffyJack, and EZJack. The last two look cool and retract, but count
on shock cord, which is my big beef with the Sail Cradle, as after a year or
two it degrades dramatically. The Harken and Schaeffer are roughly equivalent
in price (Schaeffer a little more), but the Schaeffer does not require you to
modify the sail cover. Info on the Wichard system was sketchy at best, and its
only advantage (selling point) was that it was clipped in on the mast, so you
could more easily remove it (you still have to go up).

Subject: RE: [IC27A] Lazy Jacks
I have Lazy Jacks installed on my Catalina 27. I often sail shorthanded or
with just my wife. The lazy Jacks allow me to not have to go to the Mast to
raise and lower the main. There are some drawbacks. When raising heading
directly into the wind is important so the battens do not tuck themselves
into the jack lines which will stop the raising of the sail. This happens
on occasion and then to clear the sail you can on occasion clear by pulling
the leach of the sail to clear the batten. Sometimes the solution is to
lower the sail and restart.
Another problem is lowering the sail. The weight of the sail is often not
sufficient to pull down the sail. To solve this problem I have added a line
(small light weight nylon line) from the head of the sail down to turn at
the mast and then to the cockpit. When I release the halyard I then pull
this line and the sail comes down all the way into the lazy jacks. I have
not needed to go on top of the cabin to tie the sail until I dock.

Listers,
I need to do something about Lazy Jacks. Does anybody use a system they like
or dislike, and why?
Thanks,

Hi John,
Henry and I frequently sail the Chester River, particularly the lower
end, since we keep our boat on a creek just off Grays Inn Creek near
the mouth of the Chester. We winter her at Chestertown Marina.
There's a lovely place to anchor - Shippen Cove - on Grays Inn Creek,
which flows into the Chester behind Eastern Neck. This would be a
little out of your way, but worth it. Another good place to anchor is
the Corsica River, which is up the Chester a bit, but not terribly far
from where it meets the bay.
Comegy's Bight (in the Chester River) is also reputed to be a nice
place to anchor. It's up the river a bit.
If you go as far as Chestertown, there's a decent restaurant right on
the waterfront beside the marina, called "Fish Whistle". You
shouldn't have any problem getting a slip at Chestertown marina, but
I'd call ahead to reserve a space just to be safe.
Of course, there are many neat shops and restaurants within walking
distance of the marina.
Fair winds!
