I have a tiller and like the aft traveler location very much for our 1975! A friend of mine has a slightly newer Catalina 27 with a wheel that has the mid-cockpit traveler just head of the binacle. I will see if I can garner any comments from him regarding the pros and cons.
I assume that would be the "upgrade" that you are after. The traveler over the companionway would be, in my opinion, a downgrade.
