I use electrical conduit. You can bend it with a hot air gun. The larger  
ends fit on the top of the stanchions. Cut the tubing with a cutting bit in a 
 Dremel tool. 
 
On top of the mast, I lay much larger plastic tubes, with holes cut for the 
 fittings that are on top of the mast (when in horizontal pisition. The 
cross  electrical conduit fit into holes in the large plastic tubes. 
 
A 30x20 tarp just fits over the frame, with a small tarp covering the back  
of the life railing.
 
Oh yes, I use pipe insulation over the bends in the electrical conduit,  
just over the stanchions.
