In answer to your question, I think that "puts me" keeping my cover and trying 
to use it while I'm in the water. I've heard of others doing this and even if I 
don't put in on this season, next winter (when the boat is likely on land), I 
would probably regret selling it...

Good luck in whatever method you use to cover your boat and if I come across 
any prices on new canvas, I'll  certainly let you know.
