Generally I believe the maximum whisker pole length is the "J" dimension
of the sail. Going to be longer than a spinnaker pole. Doesn' t have
to be that long and usually they are adjustable. I use one a lot -
racing to a mark directly downwind against planing boats w/spinnakers I
find I go faster to the mark with less effort just pointing at it and
using a whisker pole. I tried using a gennaker and (IMHO) because I
didn't plane didn't find it a time win due to having to jibe downwind to
the mark & hence cover extra ground. But that is a pretty artificial
situation (called the Wed. night beercan race). And the setup is
considerably simpler and easier to handle than an asymmetric (no extra
sail to deal with). But on any kind of a reach there is more power in
the latter.

However it is my understanding that you don't generally use a pole with
an asymmetrical spinnaker (except special ones forward).
