Robert, I once had the tiller on my Catalina 25 come lose from the rudder while on a mooring at Lake Almanor in northern CA. I had the tiller up and between my main sheet to keep the rudder centered. Evidently, the wave motion during windy times made the rudder work enough to loosen the bolts holding the tiller to the tiller. I wouldn't have believed it could happen until i witnessed it first hand. I replaced the bolts and used nylock nuts to prevent the situation from re occurring. If I were to ever do it again, I would leave the tiller centered in the horizontal position and kept centered there by two heavy duty bungee cords. You want things to "work a bit" if necessary to avoid breaking if possible. I would also check the boat on a regular basis and make sure my mooring pennant was working properly. Sometimes, they can foul, shorten, and under the right conditions bounce the mooring, and the weight holding the mooring, off the bottom so it moves down the beach.
