Valerie,
   In So Cal, you may also want to consider adding a bimini that can  
zip on to the back of your dodger and tie off aft so you can get some  
relief from the hot sun, or the occasional rain shower that you may  
encounter.  A tarp over the boom can also work, but it's tough to  
sail or motor with one during a squall.
